It is what it is

Funny that Kristin should discuss the non-believer's clench on the unprovable and irrational nature of Scripture. Around here, we always say, "Give to the Bible what belongs to the Bible, and give to Science what belongs to Science." I am reading Mark, which moves rather pointedly through some pretty heavy miracles performed by Jesus, especially if you are a trained scientist as I am.

It is ironic that in my NIV study Bible, where Jesus casts the demons into the pigs, the study notes refer you to Matthew 8:32 and Luke 8:32. I thought it was a misprint! But I checked the references and they were accurate. Talk about scientific precision! But I digress...

Does the Father need to prove His love for His children? What equation describes how I feel when my children wake up and hug me Good Morning? What law of physics compels me to detour and kiss my wife's sleeping head as I move about the house in the middle of the night? Where would the non-believer have God put quantum mechanics, DNA, evolution, and the table of integrals: Old Testament or New?

God gave us the gift of rationality and through it we built Science. Science is the appreciation of the work of God, not in opposition. If we did not have the gift of rationality, the miracles of Jesus could not stand out as miraculous, no? Jesus held certain recipients of his miracles to secrecy because he was not yet ready for the full truth of his ministry to be revealed. I wonder if God has done the same with Science; kept His secrets and allows us to reveal them through scientific inquiry. Maybe the Fundamentalists should not be viewed as opponents of Science, regardless of their words and actions, but as testimony to the strength of the Holy Spirit. If each side then recognizes the beauty of the other...Hmmm...
