Esther, Psalms, and Various Prophets

This week, I've been reading a variety of things. I started out with Micah, because I was trying to find that quote about loving justice, doing kindness, and walking humbly with our God. I didn't find the quote right away, so I read the whole book. I hadn't realized how bleak the rest of that book was. I realize that many Old Testament prophets serve as a worst case scenario--if you don't shape up, these horrific things will happen.

I wanted to re-read Esther, which had been one of my favorite Old Testament stories when I was younger. But the book wasn't the story I remember. It, too, was much bleaker. And interesting that there's not much mention of God there.

One day I was stuck at the office, so I went to a used bookstore, for a bit of a break. I picked up a used copy of The Message, Eugene Peterson's wonderful take on the scripture. My New Testament came with Proverbs and Psalms, which I dipped in and out of. I think that Psalms will always be one of my favorite Old Testament books. Not very original, I know. I also love parts of Isaiah. Maybe I'll finish this week by trying to read the whole book.

I'm looking forward to the New Testament next week!
