Crossing Jordan

David's crossing, that it.
David had fled Jerusalem when his son Absalom had made a power grab to take the throne.
David's forces defeat the "rebels," Absalom is killed and David laments (Hence, Faulkner gets the title of his novel "Absalom, Absalom"). Now, crossing the Jordan from exile back to Jerusalem is a very event: who will accompany David? For it is a high honor to walk with him across the river. Thousands upon thousands show up. From people of the Tribe of Judah to those who had hurled insults at David when he fled (Shimei) to those said to have supported David's enemies (wrongly accused as it turns out - Mephibosheth). Pardons are delivered, oaths taken, blessings distributed and permanent invitations to dinner offered to some.

And tribes bickers (Judah and Israel). This is a foretaste of what is to come after the death of the next king, Solomon, when Judah and Israel will divide into two kingdoms.
But for now, David's back and his story nears its conclusion.
